Why Uganda is the next great coffee origin

Uganda grows Arabica at altitudes between 1,500 and 2,300 metres above sea level — higher than much of Ethiopia, higher than most of Kenya. The elevation forces the coffee cherry to develop slowly over months, concentrating sugars and flavor compounds that produce complexity most origins cannot match.

The Bugisu region on the slopes of Mount Elgon has been growing coffee for generations. Farmers here have inherited both the land and the knowledge of how to work it. What Uganda has lacked is not quality — it has lacked a direct route to the Canadian consumer.

Uganda has always been capable of this. Now Canadians can taste it.
